London Stansted (STN/EGSS) 21st June 2018 (12:00 – 20:15)

Unless you are needing to dent the Ryanair fleet, Stansted doesn’t always spring to mind as a place to spend a day plane spotting. However whilst it is true that Ryanair dominate the traffic at Stansted, over recent years there has been a growing number of other operators now using the airport, which make it quite an interesting prospect – especially if like me you don’t often get over there. Another draw for the enthusiast is the growing number of executive jet movements, together with a very healthy Cargo operation, (for example most days will see several freighter movements not least from Fed Ex and UPS).

Viewing at the airport is really limited to a grass bank to the north of the runway adjacent to Belmer Road, which offers good views through the fence and is great for spotting. Parking is available at the kerbside and there is normally many cars parking along this stretch of road so its hard to miss. A short walk through the tree line and the airport is in front of you. There are no facilities here (only the bushes!), so provisions need to be brought along – and all litter taken home and not left.

For photography, there is now only a single mound (following the recent removal of the second mound favoured by most photographers – The second mound still exists but is a bit lower than it was 3-3-19) which is located south along the fenceline from the main Belmer Road grass bank. This gets a clear view over the fence but is only good in the afternoons (from 2pm onwards during the summer). A small set of steps will be required if you want to avoid the top of the fence being visible in your photographs. The trees and foliage is growing tall at this location (the foliage has now been cut down as of 3-3-19), and when aircraft are landing on 04 (as was the case with this visit) there is little warning when aircraft suddenly appear and get airbourne, or roll out and vacate. Bizjets vacate at the intersection just south of this location and you need to be very quick to catch them before they are backlit.

Most GA is parked on the various ramps around the old terminal complex which is also northside, and it is not uncommon to see private wide-body transports from the Middle Eastern countries amongst the smaller GA types. Viewing around the Old Terminal area needs to be undertaken with a degree of discretion and most definitely with respect for the operators who are based there. In recent years there has been complaints from the various businesses in this area on account of the activities of plane spotters, particularly the fenceline/car park at Universals, which hasn’t helped the cause. There is a small pay and display car park on the approach road into this area (First Avenue) and enthusiasts are encouraged to park here and then walk to the fenceline south of the terminal, but north of Universals. It may not be possible to see everything, but its better than nothing. I tend to stay in the car and drive a  loop pulling over briefly to the kerbside near the fenceline to read what I can, and then continue on to another unofficial viewing opportunity near the village of Burton End.

To get to this alternative location, turn right from First Avenue onto Bury Lodge Lane, and follow the road until you enter the village of Burton End. To the side of The Ash pub car park is a small grass track/path. Follow this path and it bears left, past a wooden shack and over a small stream until you emerge at the perimeter fence. The wooden shack appears to be lived in, and I am unsure if the owner would be pleased that plane spotters are traipsing past his property, however this appears to be a well trodden route and on this visit there were many other spotters doing the same (mainly to photograph a Thai Air Force A340). therefore be respectful if approached by anyone and be prepared to leave if asked. From here there are good views across a large number of the stands and the fayair hangers. Not everything can be seen from here, but by walking the fenceline you can get most. In the afternoon and into the evening good photo opportunities can be had. be respectful if when parking in the village and if you use the pub car park, why not pop in for a drink by way of a thankyou.

An example of the view is shown below;

Below is the shack – is this someones house? Hopefully the path is a public right of way!

For those wishing to stay over night, the Hilton Hotel on the south side reportedly has good views over the terminal apron.

What to see: Many Ryanairs, although a lot of the older fleet appears to be based. Quite a few easyJet and up to 10 Jet 2 including the leased A321’s. Emirates have recently started a new Dubai service with 777’s and Pegasus have a few flights per day using B737’s and A320N’s. Primera have also started their new transatlantic services using A321N’s and a leased B757 from National Airlines. Atlas Global of Turkey as well as Cobalt also operate.
Fed Ex operate multiple flights in the afternoon and evening. During this visit 2 x MD’11’s 1 x B757F were seen, with a further MD11 arriving after I left. An A300F also arrived (which I missed) whilst on a walkabout to photograph the Thai AF A340. UPS have 1 x 767F and 1 x 757F day stopping with a second B767F arriving late evening. Asiana 744F on some days West Atlantic Cargo, Swift Air, and Aero Contractors also operate in the evening. earlier in the day a China Southern Cargo 777F had been in but had departed before I arrived). These are fairly regular during the week in the early mornings.

  1. Hi Martin. This is a superb report, and with so much detail.
    I haven’t visited Stansted for a few years. Your report has certainly wetted my appetite for a return.
    All good wishes, Eric
