The first overseas visit of the year was to Zurich to catch some traffic arriving for the World Economic Forum, which takes place at Davos each year. The flight with Swiss international departed LHR at 06:00 and HB-IJR was airbourne from runway 27L on time. The level of service in Economy on this short flight was excellent, with a small complimentary snack and non alcoholic drinks served. The flight cost was £120 return. 1 hour 20 minutes later we touched down on runway 14. Once again an airside tour was booked with Buch Air Tours for 35CHF. The tours depart from the Observation Deck (the deck is free if you have a boarding pass for your flight). You need to check in for your tour 10 minutes before it departs, and Hi-Viz vests are provided. The tour is great and lasts about 2 hours and gets to most of the Biz ramps (but not as many areas as last year). The downside is that there are quite a number of people on each tour, and it can be a bit of a scrum to get your shot. The plus side is that you have the almost unique opportunity to be airside on the ramp at a major European airport.
Viewing was undertaken from the viewing deck until 10:20, then after the tour I walked to parking garage P6. to reach here turn left out of the terminal and keep walking along the path for five minutes or so. The car park is on the right and cannot be missed as it will be visible for all of the time you are walking. Level 10 gives a great view over the threshold for runway 28 which was being used for most departures on this day. Bring a warm hat and coat, Zurich gets very cold at this time of year!
