London Heathrow 7-8-20

Another trip out to Heathrow to catch the growing number of flights operating into here as the Pandameic gradually subsides. Not so many unusual visitors today, but gratifying to see the approach filling up again with the hope that normality will return soon. In Fact Heathrow has recently returned to dual runway ops with the traditional swap at 3pm on account of the traffic increase. There are still long spells of inactivity however, so I decided to move around the airport to catch approach and departures and as I had a list of ‘dues’ from the great Heathrow Spotters group, I could plan my time accordingly. I parked the car at the Visitor Centre on the northern perimeter which is £12 for 7 hours – although the machines were not working today. I walked up to the BA maintenance base to catch approach shots onto runway 27R and stood here for a couple of hours. The walk is about 20 minutes and even though it was only 8am it was already very hot (today would be the warmest day of the year so far at a scorching 36 degrees). After seeing the Rwandair A330 land I headed back to the car and popped into the nearby Renaissance hotel to use their ‘facilities’ (Face coverings are required to enter the hotel at the moment). I then drove around to the southern side of the airfield and parked the car near the Rising Sun pub and walked along the southern Perimeter to a spot near the Esso  fuel station. This is a great location for departure shots –  especially ‘heavies’, short haul aircraft are often quite high when they pass this spot. After a short while I drove back around to the BA maintenance base and parked in the terminal 2 and 3 Long term car park which is currently free for the first two hours. this enabled me to park here for a while to catch an MSR B787 and HVN A350 on a first visit before heading back around to the Rising Sun pub to see the Aeroflot B777 and Kenyan B787 depart. I then drove back to the vis centre car park and decided to catch a bus back to the BA maint base for the SIA A350 and Cargojet B767F landing. I caught the 283 bus from the Bath Road and got off at the BA maint base. Much easier than walking, especially in this heat, and as public transport is free within the bounds of the airport on selected services, its was cost effective as well. Face coverings are required on public transport otherwise you will not be allowed on. After this, I returned to the car by bus (stopping at McDonalds for a drink!) and drove across to the Hounslow Urban Farm for the arrivals onto 27L (they had switched at 3pm). Parking here is free and gives a good view of arrivals although you are a bit further away than say Myrtle Ave. Cloud was building and by 4:30 the light was grotty so i called it a day. The temp was still 35 degrees despite the cloud! A lot of moving around but with reasonable gaps between interesting movements, it is worth doing.
